24 sections

China enters Summer Solstice

June 21 marks the summer solstice which is the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. People eat noodles for good luck at the start of the summer solstice, according to Chinese tradition. Doctors say during the hot summer weather, people’s digestive system is relatively weak, and they suggest people eat green beans, water melon, fish, sugar cane, pears and other light seasonal food.

Chinese Calendar and 24 Seasonal Segments

24 solar terms

The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar, incorporating elements of a lunar calendar with those of a solar calendar. It is still used for agricultural arrangements, marking traditional East Asian holidays such as the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), the Dragon Boat Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival, and in astrology, such as choosing the most auspicious date for a wedding or the opening of a building. Because each month follows one cycle of the moon, it is also used to determine the phases of the moon.
